From the Pastor - An Open Letter to the Congregation - July 5, 2009

Dear Members and Friends of FPC:

Summer began in earnest in early June as many of you began to make plans for summer vacations. At the same time, your church sent youth and adults to the Montreat Youth Conference for the fifth straight year. This is an opportunity for young people to learn more about their Christian faith and has become a vital program of our youth ministry. At Montreat, the youth worshiped each day, and were nurtured by counselors and other adults from this church including your own pastor.

The very same week that our kids were at Montreat, two of our members attended a leadership training course for the Stephen Ministry Series in Orlando, Florida. This ministry will prove to be a most worthy tool for our church as it reaches out to people that we know and love who are hurting through all kinds of circumstances of life.

This week as July begins to unfold our younger disciples will be nurtured through our annual Vacation Bible School. Those attending VBS will learn Bible stories, sing, worship, make crafts, play games, and experience great fellowship with other children and adult volunteers. They will learn who they are in Jesus Christ – the most important relationship of all.

All of these programs depend upon the financial resources of our members and friends who worship regularly at First Presbyterian Church. On behalf of the Session, I want to thank you for your continued support of all of our ministries. These are uncertain economic times, but because of those who continue to give faithfully and regularly, people have been nurtured in faith and are continuing to learn how to follow Christ more closely.

I hope that you have remained up-to-date with the financial commitment you made in late January to FPC. If you have fallen behind, we hope that you will be able to make up the commitment soon. This week, a statement will be mailed that will indicate your giving so far this year. If you did not make a commitment in January or have joined the church recently, please pick up an Estimate of Giving Card from the church office this week.

Again, thank you for supporting the mission and ministry of First Presbyterian Church through your unified giving. May the peace of Jesus Christ be with you all!

It has been several years since we have experienced what is commonly known as the "summer slump" in regular giving. Most often this occurs through the natural "disconnect" as we take off for vacations and inadvertently forget the financial commitment we've made to our community of faith.
