Be Not Afraid

I voted early this year. I had told myself however that I wouldn’t do it. For me it’s like putting up Christmas trees before Halloween . Add to that, 10 years of conducting elections on the local, state, and national level (in a former life of course) confirmed that election day itself was almost “sacred” in my mind. But I did it anyway and this is why:

I can now delete political e-mails and other correspondence with a clear conscience and know that not only have I done my civic duty but that I don’t have to be “afraid” anymore. Yes, I don’t have to be afraid. This “fear” tactic is one that has been used unfortunately by both political parties in the final days of the election campaign. I find it rather distasteful and theologically unsound. I also feel that this should be of great concern for all Christians. 1 John 4:18 says “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out all fear.” Strong, intelligent, people of faith are on both sides of this election. Yes, we are being asked to vote at a time when America does not look its very best. Our domestic problems are immense and nearly 80 percent of all Americans agree that fundamental change on many levels is greatly needed. And so we are voting, no matter what side we’re on FOR CHANGE!

As a pastor and spiritual leader in this world, my prayer is that we will be able to make another decision as we cast our vote and that is to trust not in the power of fear, but rather in the power of hope and love and God’s amazing grace.

Not too long ago, it was President Ronald Reagan who reminded Americans to choose hope over fear. At specific times in their lives I reminded my children that they were about to see the best and the worst of humanity (one time I have to admit was at a Georgia-Florida football game). Many times I believe that the very best and worst of humanity is often exhibited when we make the decision whether it’s going to be hope or fear that guides our lives.

With this in mind and Christ Jesus as our ultimate hope for this world, cast your vote this week on Tuesday November 4 (if you haven’t done it already). I am convinced that both candidates offer an opportunity for change. And once it’s all over, change will ultimately happen. But keep in mind, your candidate, your agent for change may or may not win. And that … you cannot change.
But through it all, remember perfect love will cast out the fear that is in you. God’s Word tells us so!
